About the class
Poi is one of the most beautiful and iconic traditions of Māori culture, combining graceful movement, rhythm, storytelling and expression. Originally developed by Māori to strengthen coordination, flexibility and dexterity, poi has evolved into a cherished art form that is performed by people of all ages and is an integral part of kapa haka (traditional Māori performance).
Now is your chance to experience this captivating Māori tradition and discover the joy, mindfulness and connection it inspires.
Together, we'll explore the history and cultural significance of poi while learning foundational movements and techniques. This beautiful art form combines rhythm, coordination, creativity, posture and expression to create flowing patterns that are both meditative and uplifting. Practicing poi cultivates presence, confidence and joyful self-expression while strengthening the connection between mind, body and spirit and offering a meaningful connection to an important aspect of Māori culture.
