About the class

Join master weaver Karley Brown for a hands-on introduction to the art of creating a traditional Māori tāhei (neck adornment).

In this immersive workshop, you’ll learn and practice whatu aho rua—the foundational two-pair twining technique used in Māori cloak weaving. Guided step by step, you’ll explore the rhythm and precision of this time-honoured method while gaining insight into its cultural significance. As your confidence grows, you’ll apply the technique to craft your own unique tāhei, thoughtfully embellished with raffia to add texture and movement.

By the end of the session, you’ll leave not only with a beautiful handmade piece, but also with a deeper appreciation for the artistry and traditions of Māori weaving.
