About the class

Matariki is the star cluster that marks te Tau Hou Māori, the Māori New Year, in Te Ao Māori (Māori culture). Join Amelia to discover the meaning and signifiance of Matariki and connect with our Learn Māori Abroad community on Zoom. Come and celerbate Matariki with us!

This workshop includings teachings on:

  • The origins, history and cultural narratives around Matariki
  • The Maramataka (Māori lunar calendar) and it's importance to Māori
  • The names and meanings of each star
  • The Tribal variations of Matariki
  • How you can celebrate Matariki
  • As well as opportunities to engage and connect with community 

Speacial guest performer and Learn Māori Abroad teacher, Chris will  be facilitating a meditation during our session by sharing  a live performance of the smooth and melodic sounds of the kōauau (traditional Māori noise flute) to create space for you reflection on the previous year and dream about the year ahead.
